Negative self-perceptions and severity of NSSI: Testing the benefits and barriers model.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is theorized to be caused by negative associations with the self, including low self-esteem, but the mechanisms explaining why low self-esteem is related to more severe NSSI are unclear. The current study aimed to address this limitation by evaluating a mediation model, proposing that low self-esteem would relate to more severe NSSI through increasing self-punishment motivations. Data came from 468 undergraduate students with a history of NSSI who completed an online survey measuring NSSI characteristics and functions, self-esteem, and self-punishment motivations for NSSI. Mediation was tested using a structural equation model using bootstrapped 95% percentile-corrected confidence intervals in which NSSI severity was modeled as a latent variable composed of NSSI frequency, recency, and versatility of methods. The total model was significant and the indirect effect of self-esteem on NSSI severity through self-punishment motives was significant. Self-esteem also retained significant direct effects on NSSI severity, indicating partial mediation. These results provide support for the benefits and barriers model of NSSI, suggesting that negative self-views increase risk for more severe NSSI through self-punishment motivations. Clinical interventions that emphasize self-compassion and focus on modifying self-punishment motivations may help reduce NSSI behavior.

Quantifying the Importance of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Characteristics in Predicting Different Clinical Outcomes: Using Random Forest Model.

Existing research on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents has primarily concentrated on general risk factors, leaving a significant gap in understanding the specific NSSI characteristics that predict diverse psychopathological outcomes. This study aims to address this gap by using Random Forests to discern the significant predictors of different clinical outcomes. The study tracked 348 adolescents (64.7% girls; mean age = 13.31, SD = 0.91) over 6 months. Initially, 46 characteristics of NSSI were evaluated for their potential to predict the repetition of NSSI, as well as depression, anxiety, and suicidal risks at a follow-up (T2). The findings revealed distinct predictors for each psychopathology. Specifically, psychological pain was identified as a significant predictor for depression, anxiety, and suicidal risks, while the perceived effectiveness of NSSI was crucial in forecasting its repetition. These findings imply that it is feasible to identify high-risk individuals by assessing key NSSI characteristics, and also highlight the importance of considering diverse NSSI characteristics when working with self-injurers.

Early maladaptive schemas and the risk of nonsuicidal self-injury in college students: A retrospective study.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) may be closely related to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). The present study aimed to discuss the relationship between EMS and a personal history of NSSI. This was a retrospective study. A total of 1339 Chinese college students between 16 and 29 years old were asked to complete a questionnaire survey regarding their personal history of NSSI and EMSs. 116 college students reported a history of NSSI (NSSI group), who differed significantly in terms of all EMS-related scores than non-NSSI group(n = 1223). Logistic regression analysis showed that the scores in the disconnection/rejection schema domain exhibited by subjects who were the only child in their family could help differentiate between college students with or without NSSI. The emotional deprivation schema was significantly associated with the lifetime frequency of NSSI behaviors; the vulnerability to harm or illness schema was significantly associated with the internal emotion regulation function and pain associated with NSSI; and the enmeshment/underdeveloped self schema was significantly associated with the addictive features of NSSI. The self-sacrifice schema was significantly associated with the external emotion regulation function of NSSI; the enmeshment/underdeveloped self schema was positively related with the sensation-seeking function of NSSI; and the abandonment/instability schema was negatively related the sensation-seeking function of NSSI. The disconnection/rejection schema domain was highly related with NSSI behaviors. EMS is significantly associated with the history, functions, addictive features, and severity of NSSI. Every EMS is worthy of further investigation and discussion with patients in the context of NSSI behaviors during clinical therapy.

Nonsuicidal self-injury characteristics: A mixed methods analysis of differences between veterans and civilians

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a well-established risk factor for suicidal behavior, with certain NSSI characteristics being associated with increased risk. In the United States (U.S.), the veteran suicide rate is elevated, though lifetime prevalence rates of NSSI appear similar between veterans and civilians. There is limited research that directly compares veterans and civilians across multiple NSSI characteristics to examine between-group differences in NSSI behavior and provide important context for the application of NSSI research with the veteran population. This study examined differences between U.S. veterans and civilians with a history of suicidal ideation across several NSSI characteristics, including method, severity, age of onset, shame, distress, and reason for initial NSSI engagement. A sample of 527 veterans and civilians completed measures of direct and indirect NSSI behaviors along with supplemental questions designed to further assess endorsed NSSI behaviors. Additionally, respondents provided written responses to an open-ended question about their reasons for initial engagement in NSSI, which were coded for post-hoc analysis. Chi-square difference tests and t-tests were conducted, revealing significant group differences between veterans and civilians in NSSI method, lifetime versatility, age of onset, age at last occurrence, and reasons for initial engagement. No significant differences were found in NSSI frequency, severity, shame, or distress. These findings provide valuable information on similarities and differences in NSSI behavior characteristics between U.S. veterans and civilians with lifetime suicidal ideation to inform future research and the assessment of NSSI in these populations.

Pattern of non-suicidal self-injury in Chinese male prisoners: A latent class analysis.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) occurs more frequently in the prisoner population than in the general population. Monitoring and management of this behavior is challenging because NSSI may present in diverse ways. People often use more than one method of NSSI, and there are many possible combinations of these behaviors. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify subgroups of male inmates based on methods and frequency of NSSI. A total of 1042 male prisoners in China (Mage  = 38.45, SD = 10.67) completed measures of hopelessness, sensation seeking, identity integration, and suicidal ideation, and NSSI was assessed in a structured interview. Results of the LCA supported a three-class model: high-NSSI (1.8%), moderate-NSSI (8.0%), and no-or-negligible NSSI (90.2%). Multinomial logistic regression analyses showed that prisoners in the high-NSSI and moderate-NSSI classes were significantly more likely than those in the no-or-negligible NSSI class to show high hopelessness, high sensation seeking, and low identity. Furthermore, suicidal ideation was significantly higher in the high-NSSI and moderate-NSSI classes than in the no-or-negligible NSSI class. Classifying groups of prisoners based on features of NSSI is potentially useful for understanding risk factors and for developing tailored prevention and treatment strategies.

Non-suicidal Self-injury and Quantified Electroencephalogram in Adolescents and Young Adults with Depression.

: This study investigated the association between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and quantified electroencephalogram (QEEG) in patients with depression. We aimed to identify clinical features of NSSI and differences in QEEG findings. : This retrospective study used the medical records of 52 inpatients with major depressive episodes, aged from 15 to 30. The patients were categorized according to their history of NSSI. Their main diagnosis and sex were also considered. To evaluate clinical symptoms, self-reported scales were used. The absolute power and the Z-scores of various waves were included. : NSSI was associated with suicidal ideations (p = 0.001) and trauma history (p = 0.014). In the binary logistic regression analysis, the Z-score of absolute alpha power was higher on the FP2 node (p = 0.029), lower on the F4 node (p = 0.029) in the NSSI group. The absolute high beta power in the NSSI group was higher on the FP2 and the F3 node, but lower on the F7 and F8 node. Patients with NSSI showed higher Z-score of the absolute delta power at the FP2 node (p = 0.044). The absolute gamma power was higher on the FP2 (p = 0.012) and the F3 node (0.043), lower on the FP1 (p = 0.019) and the F7 node (0.018) in the NSSI group. The absolute high gamma power at the FP2 (p = 0.017) and F8 nodes (p = 0.045) were higher in the NSSI group. : Patients with NSSI may have clinical features distinct from those of patients without NSSI. QEEG results have shown some differences, although it is less applicable due to some limitations.

Examining the Presence, Frequency, and Associated Characteristics of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury by Proxy: Initial Validation of the Nonsuicidal Self-Injury by Proxy Questionnaire (NSSIBPQ).

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) by proxy is the intentional destruction of one's own body tissue through the elicitation of another being's actions. Despite its clinical relevance, research on NSSI by proxy is limited and there are no available measures of this behavior. This research aimed to characterize NSSI by proxy among young adults and provide preliminary data on the validity of a new self-report measure, the NSSI by Proxy Questionnaire (NSSIBPQ). Two nationwide community samples of young adults (one general community sample and one with a history of traditional NSSI and suicidality) completed online studies. NSSI by proxy was reported by 18% of the general community sample and 45% of the self-injuring sample. Findings support the clinical relevance of NSSI by proxy and its potential to meet criteria for an NSSI disorder diagnosis. Results also provide preliminary support for the internal consistency and convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity of the NSSIBPQ.

Implicit Assessment of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Group Differences in Temporal Stability of the Self-Injury Implicit Association Test (SI-IAT)

Objective We examine differences on the Self-Injury Implicit Association Test (SI-IAT) by history of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), in a test-retest design, to examine short-term temporal stability of SI-IAT scores. Method Treatment-seeking participants (N = 113; 58% female; 89% White; Mage = 30.57) completed the SI-IAT and self-report measures at two time points (M Timeframe = 3.8 days). Results Data suggested NSSI (51% of the sample endorsed lifetime NSSI) was related to Time 1 (T1) identity and attitude, and affected stability of scores. T1 and T2 SI-IAT identity and attitude were more strongly related for participants with NSSI history. NSSI characteristics (recency; number of methods) affected stability. Conclusions The short-term test-retest reliability of the SI-IAT is strong among those with NSSI history from T1 to T2. However, the SI-IATs use with participants without a history of NSSI was not supported beyond its established ability to differentiate between groups by NSSI history. This test may provide clinically-relevant assessment among those with a history of NSSI.

Identifying clinical risk factors correlated with addictive features of non-suicidal self-injury among a consecutive psychiatric outpatient sample of adolescents and young adults.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an issue primarily of concern in adolescents and young adults. Recent literature suggests that persistent, repetitive, and uncontrollable NSSI can be conceptualized as a behavioral addiction. The study aimed to examine the prevalence of NSSI with addictive features and the association of this prevalence with demographic and clinical variables using a cross-sectional and case-control design. A total of 548 outpatients (12 to 22years old) meeting the criteria for NSSI disorder of DSM-5 were enrolled and completed clinicalinterviews by 4 psychiatrists. NSSI with addictive features were determined by using a single-factor structure of addictive features items in the Ottawa self-injury inventory (OSI). Current suicidality, psychiatric diagnosis, the OSI, the revised Chinese Internet Addiction Scale, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale were collected. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to explore associations between risk factors and NSSI with addictive features. This study was conducted from April 2021 to May 2022. The mean age of participants was 15.93 (SD = 2.56) years with 418 females (76.3%), and the prevalence of addictive NSSI was 57.5% (n = 315). Subjects with addictive NSSI had a higher lifetime prevalence of nicotine and alcohol use, a higher prevalence of current internet addiction, suicidality, and alexithymia, and were more likely to have physical abuse/neglect, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse than NSSI subjects without addictive features. Among participants with NSSI, the strongest predictors of addictive features of NSSI were female (OR = 2.405, 95% CI 1.512-3.824, p < 0.0001), alcohol use (OR = 2.179, 95% CI 1.378-3.446, p = 0.001), current suicidality (OR = 3.790, 95% CI 2.351-6.109, p < 0.0001), and psysical abuse in childhood (OR = 2.470, 95% CI 1.653-3.690, p < 0.0001). Nearly 3 out of 5 patients (12-22years old) with NSSI met the criteria of NSSI with addictive features in this psychiatric outpatients sample. Our study demonstrated the importance of the necessity to regularly assess suicide risk, and alcohol use, as well as focus more on females and subjects who had physical abuse in childhood to prevent addictive NSSI.

Non-suicidal self-injury function: prevalence in adolescents with depression and its associations with non-suicidal self-injury severity, duration and suicide.

Given that adolescents with depression are at the highest risk for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a thorough understanding of their NSSI functions, as well as associations between functions and severe behavioral consequences, is essential for risk assessment and invention development. Adolescents with depression from 16 hospitals across China, for whom data was available regarding their NSSI function, frequency, number of methods used, time characteristics, and suicide history were included. Descriptive statistical analyses were performed to determine the prevalence of NSSI functions. Regression analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between NSSI functions and behavioral characteristics of NSSI and suicide attempts. Affect regulation was the primary function of NSSI and followed by anti-dissociation in adolescents with depression. Females recognized automatic reinforcement functions more frequently than males, while males had a higher prevalence of social positive reinforcement functions. Automatic reinforce functions played the prominent role in associations between NSSI functions and all the severe behavioral consequences. Specifically, functions of anti-dissociation, affect regulation, and self-punishment were all associated with NSSI frequency, while higher levels of endorsements for anti-dissociation and self-punishment were linked to more NSSI methods, and greater level of endorsement for anti-dissociation was related to longer NSSI duration. Only the increase in endorsement of self-punishment was associated with a greater hazard of suicide attempts. The dominant functions of NSSI in adolescents with depression was automatic reinforcement, specifically affect regulation. And prevalence of NSSI function differed between males and females. Anti-dissociation and self-punishment seemed to be the most risky factors as they were linked to severe NSSI or suicide behaviors. More attention should be given to these functions in risk evaluation, and the targeted interventions should be developed accordingly in a timely manner.

Unraveling the complexity of associations between a history of childhood trauma, psychotic-like experiences, depression and non-suicidal self-injury: A network analysis

BackgroundSeveral studies have reported the association of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). It has been hypothesized that both constructs might share overlapping backgrounds. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between childhood trauma, depression, PLEs and lifetime characteristics of NSSI. MethodsParticipants included individuals aged 18–35 years who had a negative history of psychiatric treatment. They were surveyed through the computer-assisted web interview. A network analysis was performed. ResultsA total of 4203 non-clinical adults (63.8 % females) were enrolled. The characteristics of NSSI and a history of childhood sexual abuse were the most central nodes in the network. A history of childhood sexual abuse was the only category of childhood trauma that was directly connected to the characteristics of NSSI (i.e., longer lifetime duration of NSSI). The shortest pathways from other categories of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, emotional neglect and bullying) were connected to the lifetime characteristics through the effects of sexual abuse. However, other pathways were also possible and converged on nodes representing persecutory thoughts, déjàvu experiences, psychomotor retardation/agitation and suicidal ideation. These psychopathological symptoms were the only nodes directly connected to the characteristics of NSSI (i.e., lifetime duration and a history of severe NSSI). LimitationsThe main limitations include the use of a non-clinical sample and cross-sectional design. ConclusionsOur findings do not support the hypothesis that PLEs and NSSI might be associated due to shared correlates. In other words, the associations of childhood trauma and PLEs with NSSI might be independent.

Functional connectivity alterations in reward-related circuits associated with non-suicidal self-injury behaviors in drug-naïve adolescents with depression

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors are a major public health concern among adolescents with depression. Such behaviors may be associated with the reward system. However, the underlying mechanism in patients with depression and NSSI still remains unclear. A total of 56 drug-naïve adolescents with depression, including 23 patients with NSSI (the NSSI group) and 33 patients without NSSI (the nNSSI group), and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was used to explore the NSSI-related FC alterations in the reward circuit. Correlation analysis was conducted between the altered FCs and clinical data. Compared with the nNSSI group, the NSSI group showed greater FC between left nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and right lingual gyrus and between right putamen accumbens and right angular gyrus (ANG). The NSSI group also had declined FC between right NAcc and left inferior cerebellum, between left cingulate gyrus (CG) and right ANG, between left CG and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), and between right CG and bilateral MTG (voxel-wise p < 0.01, cluster-wise p < 0.05, Gaussian random field correction). The FC between right NAcc and left inferior cerebellum was found positively correlated with the score of addictive features of NSSI (r = 0.427, p = 0.042). Our findings indicated that the regions in the reward circuit with NSSI-related FC alterations included bilateral NAcc, right putamen and bilateral CG, which may provide new evidence on the neural mechanisms of NSSI behaviors in adolescents with depression.

Development and validation of a prediction nomogram for non-suicidal self-injury in female patients with mood disorder.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a highly prevalent behavioral problem among people with mental disorders that can result in numerous adverse outcomes. The present study aimed to systematically analyze the risk factors associated with NSSI to investigate a predictive model for female patients with mood disorders. A cross-sectional survey among 396 female patients was analyzed. All participants met the mood disorder diagnostic groups (F30-F39) based on the Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10). The Chi-Squared Test, t-test, and the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test were used to assess the differences of demographic information and clinical characteristics between the two groups. Logistic LASSO Regression Analyses was then used to identify the risk factors of NSSI. A nomogram was further used to construct a prediction model. After LASSO regression selection, 6 variables remained significant predictors of NSSI. Psychotic symptom at first-episode (β = 0.59) and social dysfunction (β = 1.06) increased the risk of NSSI. Meanwhile, stable marital status (β = -0.48), later age of onset (β = -0.01), no depression at onset (β = -1.13), and timely hospitalizations (β = -0.10) can decrease the risk of NSSI. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.73 in the internal bootstrap validation sets, indicated that the nomogram had a good consistency. Our findings suggest that the demographic information and clinical characteristics of NSSI can be used in a nomogram to predict the risk of NSSI in Chinese female patients with mood disorders.

Associations Between Family Function and Non-suicidal Self-injury Among Chinese Urban Adolescents with and Without Parental Migration.

The study aims to explore the effect of family function on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among Chinese urban adolescents with and without parental migration. Between April 21st to May 12th, 2021, adolescents were recruited from Shenzhen city of Guangdong province, China (n = 124,357). Of all the participants, 22,855 (18.4%) were left-behind children (LBC). Family function, NSSI, depression, and socio-demographic characteristics were assessed using a series of self-reported questionnaires. Urban LBC had a higher NSSI frequency, while a lower level of family function than non-LBC. After controlling for confounders, parental migration was significantly associated with NSSI, and family dysfunction was a robust risk factor for NSSI as well. The protective effect of family function on NSSI of LBC was stronger than non-LBC. This implies that children with higher levels of family function tend to exhibit a lower frequency of NSSI, especially in those with parental migration. In practice, adolescents' NSSI prevention and intervention strategies should focus on improving family function.

Nonsuicidal self-injury in a clinical sample of adolescents in Serbia

Background/Aim. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents is recognized as a significant public health concern. Adolescents with mental health problems are at an especially high risk of NSSI. The aim of the study was to assess the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with NSSI and the features of NSSI, as well as the impact of emotional reactivity and internalizing/externalizing problems on them. Methods. The observational study included a clinical sample of 111 adolescents treated at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychiatric Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina, from March 2018 to October 2019. The adolescents were divided into two groups: group A comprised of adolescents who had at least one episode of NSSI in the last year, and group B comprised of adolescents who had no NSSI episode in their experience. The following clinical scales were used to examine the differences between adolescents from group A and group B: self-report questionnaires about emotional and behavioral problems (Youth Self-Report ? YSR, Child Behavior Checklist ? CBCL), emotional reactivity (Emotion Reactivity Scale ? ERS), and suicidality (Self- Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview ? SITBI). Results. Group A contained a total of 58 adolescents older than the subjects of group B and was predominated by female participants. They had the first episode of NSSI at 13.05 and the last at 14.80 years. The most common methods of NSSI were cutting, scratching, and biting. Adolescents from group A had higher scores on ERS, higher scores on internalizing and externalizing problems, as well as higher total scores on YSR, but there was no difference between groups regarding scores on the CBCL scale. Conclusion. Due to the results obtained for emotional and behavioral problems, adolescents with NSSI should have a detailed psychiatric assessment, including social support, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy, to better understand NSSI and help them develop better coping skills.

For Better or Worse?: The role of cognitive flexibility in the association between nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempt

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been repeatedly associated with increased suicide risk. However, the transition from NSSI to suicidal thoughts and behaviors still remains as an enigma. One possible construct that may influence this relationship is cognitive flexibility, which refers to the ability to adapt responses/strategies based on environmental feedback. It may be that greater cognitive flexibility increases one's cognitive accessibility to suicide, making it a more viable option upon distress especially for those with a prior history of NSSI. Conversely, it may be that less cognitive flexibility creates a negative bias that exacerbates the effects of NSSI on suicide. Thus, in this study, we examined how NSSI characteristics (i.e., frequency and methods) interact with cognitive flexibility to predict lifetime suicide attempt (SA) history. Participants were 505 individuals with a lifetime history of NSSI who completed a survey assessing for their NSSI experiences, cognitive flexibility, and SA history. Moderation analyses were conducted while controlling for sexual orientation, which significantly predicted SA history. Results indicated a significant interaction between number of NSSI methods endorsed and cognitive flexibility. In particular, individuals were more likely to have had a history of SA if they scored higher on the alternative subscale of cognitive flexibility. The results suggest that the adaptive value of cognitive flexibility may be context dependent, and highlight the importance of personalized care among those who engage in self-harm.

Factors influencing the addiction characteristics of non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors in adolescents: A case-control study.

Many studies have shown that in the context of public health emergencies, the incidence rate of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) patients increased dramatically. This paper aims to characterize the behavioral characteristics of adolescent NSSI and analyze the influencing factors of NSSI behavior addiction characteristics. Our research was a case-control study which included 84 adolescents with NSSI (female vs. male: 59 vs. 25) and 84 healthy controls (female vs. male: 53 vs. 31). All the participants enrolled were aged 12-18 years. The differences in the scores of the following five scales were compared between the case and control groups: Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran (EMBU), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS); Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) and Video Game Dependence Scale (VDG-S). The characteristics of NSSI behavior of the study group were evaluated using the Ottawa Self Inventory Chinese Revised Edition (OSIC). And a binary logistic regression model was developed to analyze the factors that influence adolescent NSSI behavioral addiction characteristics. In the study group, the emotional warmth scores in the father's and mother's rearing style scores in the EMBU were significantly lower than the controls. The BSMAS and VDG-S scores were significantly higher than those in the control group. 38 cases of NSSI with addiction characteristics accounted for 45.24% in the study group. The risk factors for NSSI addiction traits were as follows: female, single-child, high level of VDG-S scores, high scores of excessive interferences in father's rearing style, and high scores of punishments and excessive interferences in mother's rearing style score. Female, only child, internet addiction, and negative parenting styles were predictors of NSSI behavioral addiction characteristics in adolescents. Targeted coping strategies should be developed to reduce the occurrence and development of self-injurious behavior, especially for female adolescents with Internet dependence in one-child families with negative parenting styles.

A longitudinal investigation of non-suicidal self-injury persistence patterns, risk factors, and clinical outcomes during the college period.

Although non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is known typically to begin in adolescence, longitudinal information is lacking about patterns, predictors, and clinical outcomes of NSSI persistence among emerging adults. The present study was designed to (1) estimate NSSI persistence during the college period, (2) identify risk factors and high-risk students for NSSI persistence patterns, and (3) evaluate the association with future mental disorders and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). Using prospective cohorts from the Leuven College Surveys (n = 5915), part of the World Mental Health International College Student Initiative, web-based surveys assessed mental health and psychosocial problems at college entrance and three annual follow-up assessments. Approximately one in five (20.4%) students reported lifetime NSSI at college entrance. NSSI persistence was estimated at 56.4%, with 15.6% reporting a high-frequency repetitive pattern (≥five times yearly). Many hypothesized risk factors were associated with repetitive NSSI persistence, with the most potent effects observed for pre-college NSSI characteristics. Multivariate models suggest that an intervention focusing on the 10-20% at the highest predicted risk could effectively reach 34.9-56.7% of students with high-frequency repetitive NSSI persistence (PPV = 81.8-93.4, AUC = 0.88-0.91). Repetitive NSSI persistence during the first two college years predicted 12-month mental disorders, role impairment, and STB during the third college year, including suicide attempts. Most emerging adults with a history of NSSI report persistent self-injury during their college years. Web-based screening may be a promising approach for detecting students at risk for a highly persistent NSSI pattern characterized by subsequent adverse outcomes.

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Thoughts and Behavior in Adolescents: Validation of SITBI-NSSI.

The lack of knowledge about Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) in Spanish adolescents, especially NSSI thoughts may be due to the paucity of NSSI assessment instruments with validity evidence in this sample. The aim of this study was to assess NSSI thoughts and behavior. In addition, the study examined the association between various NSSI features and suicidal behavior and included a preliminary validation of the new Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview - Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (SITBI-NSSI). 685 Spanish adolescents between 13 and 18 years old (M = 15.58, SD = 1.08; 60.9% girls) completed measures of NSSI features and suicidal behavior. Among adolescents, 19% thought about self-injury, and 16.8% presented NSSI behaviors. The girls had higher levels of NSSI, as well as greater frequency, number of functions, methods, and suicidal thoughts and desire. Some of the functions, methods, and precipitants differed by sex. Those with ANS had a higher risk of suicidal behavior than the comparison group. The association of SITBI-NSSI with other measures supports the validity of the data. Most features of NSSI are similar to those found in Spanish and internationally. The SITBI-NSSI could facilitate the evaluation of NSSI in Spanish adolescents.
